Verdicchio Race does things a little differently. Day Three is relatively quiet - the morning hosted the Open Skate Repechage, where the slowest 24 riders from yesterday's qualifying raced each other for the final seven spots in tomorrow's finals. That meant a cruel consolation final in which the top three would advance, but fourth would miss out. That consolation final was all women, and it was Sabrina Ambrosi of Argentina who was the unlucky fourth.
The afternoon hosted the Italian Championship - Italians only. Young favourite Giorgio Garino won convincingly, with rival Marcus Aldinucci crashing in the final corner to allow Giuseppe Maltese and Australian-based Matteo Rodinis to round out the podium.
But tomorrow is The Day. On a track that could favour smaller riders, the relatively heavy Carlos Paixão blew everybody away in qualifying. He got drafted into third place last week at Kozakov, but the drafting opportunities on this track are fewer.
The losers in the first round tomorrow will all go into a separate 32-person bracket - the Dirty30s. We'll race it all the way through to the end, in parallel with the Open Finals, with the winner taking 33rd place in the overall race.
