Alex Tongue took home $1,000 in today's Sector 9 Top 10 Shootout, beating track-record holder Kevin Reimer in an exciting day's racing. One of the favourites, Brazilian Douglas "Dalua" Silva almost missed the shootout after crashing heavily earlier in the day, but got up off the massage table only to post an uncharacteristically slow time.
Earlier Canadian Dillon Stephens qualified for tomorrow's finals in first place, beating out two-time winner Kevin Reimer, Alex Tongue and Kyle Wester.
Jackson Shapiera was the fastest of the locals, qualifying in ninth place, with 17 year old Kelly Carter right behind in tenth. Each will be desperate to be the first Australian to win this iconic race. Shapiera has battled injury every year at Newton's; this could be his year.
The 2012 female World Champion, Peruvian Marissa Nunez, is sitting in prime position to take out the women’s category. From Malaysia, Abdil Mahdzan qualified first in classic luge and second in street luge, where Australian Graham Brittain held on to first.
Newton's Nation has always been a leader when it comes to filming and broadcasting the event, and this year the video feed has been a sensation, garnering a massive worldwide audience and launching Bricin "Striker" Lyons and David Blackwood as the pre-eminent commentators for the sport.
Full results of the race are posted live on IDF.
