La Violenta: Day 1 - International Downhill Federation

Shivering in their leathers, riders battled through a cold and damp practice day at La Rioja, Argentina, an area known for its dry climate.

The track is a leg-burning, high-speed, three-kilometre tuck, but there are no genuine straights. Instead it's a series of sweepers that are at the edge of grip, and in today's damp and patchy conditions most riders took a conservative approach, preferring to stay safe for tomorrow's inevitable dry weather. Between the sweepers are chicanes that turn this three-lane road into the eye of a needle at 90 km/h.

No clear favorites emerged from today's practice. The track favors heavier riders, and the experienced Brazilian Douglas Dalua will be hard to beat. Argentinian Luca Dragone should pose a big threat after placing second at 7 Curves two weeks ago, however that was a track that favored a very different set of skills. Tomorrow's timed qualifiers will reveal more.
