Bernardo Brambila of Brazil took pole position today by taking advantage of the afternoon tailwind to post a time of 2:12.140, edging out Brazilian Douglas Dalua, followed by a pack of fast locals.
In Womens, Magda Blanc of Argentina had the fastest time of 2:31.595, edging out a strongly finishing Sabrina Ambrosi who was slicing four seconds from her best time with every run, and ended only a tenth of a second behind.
Local knowledge was the big factor today. The track is long and hard to memorize, containing many shallow potholes that are ridable, but often cause riders to break tuck and lose speed. Everybody's times tumbled throughout the day as they gained familiarity with the track's intricacies and as the tailwind swung into effect.
However finals day is likely to bring surprises as racing smarts and the confidence to ride close at 90 km/h will come into play.
It's almost summer in the southern hemisphere, but the message hasn't been fully received on this mountain range, where the warm morning sun turned to an Antarctic freeze around midday. It's an unpredictable place, and the results of tomorrow's finals, and the final IDF race of 2015, are equally unpredictable.
