After a full day of practise on friday, all riders were given a few other runs on saturday morning before the qualification session started.
All riders were equipped with the new IDF transponders, with the big screen at the start providing live results and racing information directly from the transponders to the riders and the public. The transponder system really lived up to expectations allowing for an early practice sessions then 2 separate timing sessions followed by a full Top Ten Shootout then further practice in the afternoon. It seems that long waits at the top of the hill are a thing of the past. For the second World Cup in a row riders got more runs than they could handle which we see as a big change for the sport and a long overdue improvement
Californian riders are clearly leading the way on what is a very tricky, technical and super fast track, with IDF points leader Kevin Reimer and Brazilian Douglas 'Dalua' Silva in trouble early on in this gnarly track! Kevin, though a bruised ankle after an early crash, rode one run in the timed session and placed 25th. Douglas, 2012 World Champion, hurt himself early in the event and will not race tomorrow. We hope he will recover for Maryhill Festival of Speed, as all other riders who had a tough time in the meat grinder that is Angie's Curves - it really is an elite track
After showing some great form early this year Californian Aj Haiby posted the fastest time at 1m 50.6sec and will be in the top position in the bracket on sunday, followed by James Kelly who won the Top Ten Shootout with a track record leaving Zak Maytum and Billy "Bones" Meiners respectively 3rd and 4th and challenging them during racing for sure. In the Womens Division, Marie Bougourd, aka Spooky, from France, will be also in top position, closely followed by Elena Corrigal (CAN) and Tamara Prader (Switzerland)
In the junior Division, nobody could beat Chance Gaul, who was even fast enough to sneak into the top 16 open ranking.
Racing will be spectacular on this very fast and technical track, avoiding misfortune might be hard for some leaving a few surprises and position changes as these riders challenge themselves to the limit to take out the Angie's Curves IDF World Cup.
